SLEEP
Sleep is not a privelige, it is a requirement for the proper functioning of a healthy body and mind.
Sleep is simple, sleep is complex. In this section, you will learn about the different stages of sleep, the effects of sleep deprivation,
tips for getting a good nights sleep, and why dreaming is as much spiritual as physical.
Question: What are the stages of sleep?
The stages of sleep are:
alpha...awake, relaxed, drowsy, eyes usually closed
beta....alert, attentive, thinking,
Stage 1: alpha and theta activity....this is the transition between sleep and wakefulness.
Stage 2: theta activity is the next stage, then you fall into delta
delta....deep sleep, if awakened, you will be groggy.
REM....theta waves,
you can be easily aroused, and if awakened, can recall dreaming.
A complete sleep cycle is about 90 minutes long
each cycle contains a 20-30 minute period of REM
REM means rapid eye movement...if you have a partner to study
dreaming with, this is the point where your partner can tell if you are dreaming. At this point, your partner would wake you after a few minutes of REM and take notes about the dream.
Question: What happens if I don't sleep?
Sleep deprivation impairs alertness, cognitive performance, and mood. The ability to do useful mental work declines by 25% for every successive 24 hours awake. During sleep deprivation, overall performance typically declines, primarily as a result of a reduction in speed. Accuracy is relatively preserved during sleep deprivation. After about 48 to 72
hours of sleep deprivation, you will experience fatigue, headache and
hallucination. There are some cases where after 72 to 85 hours of sleep deprivation, psychosis can occur. Sleep is imperative to your
physical and mental well being.
Question; What can I do to help myself fall asleep and stay asleep?
If you suffer from severe insomnia, you should see your physician, but
if you are looking for some tricks to help with occasional sleeplesness, try these:
Exercise
Regular exercise tends to benefit sleep; however, vigorous exercise--especially just before sleep--can arouse a person and delay sleep. Exercise in the morning also has little beneficial effect on sleep. The best time to exercise is in the afternoon.
NO Naps
Daytime naps tend to disrupt normal nighttime sleep. Naps should not be used as a substitute for poor sleep at night. There are exceptions to this general rule; many older people do sleep better at night when they take daytime naps. However, if you nap regularly and sleep poorly at night, your nighttime sleep might improve if you skip the naps.
Bedtime Snacks
If hunger keeps you awake, a light snack might help you sleep, unless it causes problems with digestion. Avoid heavy meals, alcohol, and caffeine beverages. For those who can tolerate milk, that old, time-tested remedy may work best.
Routine
The best way to sleep better is to keep a regular schedule for sleeping. Go to bed at about the same time every night, but only when you are tired. Set the alarm clock to awaken you at about the same time every morning including weekends and regardless of the amount of sleep you have had. If you have a poor night's sleep, don't linger in bed or oversleep the next day. If you awaken before it is time to rise, get out of bed and start your day.
Most people who have trouble sleeping stay in bed too long and get up too late in the morning. By establishing a regular wake-up time, you help solidify the biological rhythms that establish your periods of peak efficiency during the 24-hour day.
Don't Try too Hard
Trouble falling asleep may be brought on simply by going to bed too early.
If you go to bed and you find you can't fall asleep, don't stay in bed brooding about being awake.
Sleeping Pills A Temporary Solution at best.
All sleeping medications should be used sparingly, for the shortest possible time.
Question: Is there a connection between the physical body and spiritual body
during sleep and dreaming?
Spirituality is always an individual interpretation, in research we can find instances
like in the bible, where prophetic visions have been revealed through dreams...
